Anyone can use a mobile phone to answer both work and personal calls at any time of a day, or even seven days a week. Does this has more negative or positive effects on both individuals and society?

在具体利弊的切入点,可以从题目的关键词中寻找线索,这题的关键词包括mobile phone, work and personal calls, effects on both individuals and society, 这几个词强调了在利弊分析时必须要涉及到这些内容。

Nowadays the frenzy of using smart phones has made people overly available; they can be reached nearly 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. From my perspective, this trend can be deemed both a blessing and a curse – it represents something of a philosophical divide about how people view this tendency.

From the positive perspective, one of the most frequently mentioned benefit of the trend towards reliance on smart phones can be seen in the increasing efficiency in work. Living in the whitewater business world of flux, working adults are inundated with multiple tasks that require prompt responses. Had it not been for mobile phones, people would fail to deal with many tricky conditions immediately. One beneficiary of the portable working model is stock brokers, who need to be informed with up-to-minute market information in order to make right decisions. The same is true to personal lives, when cell phones today allow busy working adults maintain emotional bonds with family members and friends, either by calls or instant messaging applications.

However, the aforementioned merits can also be recognized from an opposite angle – the over availability on portable phones inevitably leads to the imbalance between work and private life. Smart phones allow employers to track their underlings wherever they go, thus making employees feel the lack of privacy. To complicate matters even more, the relentless use of cell phones at any moment poses threats to traffic safety, given the ubiquitous phenomenon that more drivers tend to make calls during driving. The misgiving has been proven by research evidence that records approximated one third of traffic accidents caused by the causation after 2000.

It is my conclusion therefore, people’s over availability thanks to smart phones can be recognized as both positive and negative depending on the perspective from which we see the tendency.
