With major cities continue growing, are there any problems to young people? How to solve these problems?

It is apparent that urbanization occurs rapidly for a number of reasons in many parts of the world.  Accordingly, these regions are also experiencing a vast and growing population of young people, who unfortunately, are running into major challenges at the threshold of urbanization.  As this stands, strategies should recognize and proactively address these challenges head-on.

It is observed that youth experience the challenges of employment and economic inclusion differently or more acutely than other populations.   As cities are expanding, the number of urban dwellers are growing year on year as people migrate to cities to study, work and live.  The lack of developed land for housing, large influx of rural immigrants to the cites in search of better life, and the elevated prices of land and building materials all exacerbate the scarcity of houses.  Therefore, although income in urban areas is high, the soaring costs of living make the incomes seem horribly low, especially for young dwellers, who primarily with comparatively lower income, do not own decent amount of savings at their disposal.  Also, it is noticed that the problem of joblessness is pervasive in urban areas, and it is even higher among young generation.  As the illusion that there are ample job opportunities that provide access to high salary, continually draw people from rural areas to seek better livelihood, the intensifying competition and the increasing relocation of people from rural or developing areas to urban areas is the main cause of unemployment.

Fortunately, there are some feasible practices, which could help mitigate the negative impacts of urbanization.  Firstly, the government could speed up the introduction of efficient markets for labor and capital.  Private investment should be encouraged so as to utilize resources and create more job opportunities, while subsidies and grants may as well be provided to guide and ensure sustainable development projects.  Secondly, urban planners could dedicate to ensure essential social services including education, health and housing to be available and affordable to all urban dwellers.  Plans to further loosen the regulation of urban household registration could be put on agenda, aiming at allowing migrant workers to settle down and have equal access to public service as their urban counterparts.

In conclusion, we should not be simply keen on developing a city without considering those negative consequences.  Instead, the urban shareholders should modify the urban development process and outline promising initiatives to design and build sustainable cites that embrace safe and livable habitats for the youth populations.
