Research shows that overeating can be just as harmful as smoking. Thus the advertising of certain food products should be banned, as cigar is banned in many countries. Do you agree or disagree?

People are bombarded with food advertisements every day and this is possibly why they have a strong appetite for some food products such as fast food and snacks. Personally,I believe imposing a ban on these advertisements can be a solution, but this is too narrow an approach.

Banning food advertising may reduce the number of overeaters to some extent. These advertisements normally promote the message that people can find enjoyment in eating some kinds of food. For example, fast food, which is normally full of fat and sugar, looks delicious on television advertisements, and advertisers also invite some celebrities to endorse some fast food brands. Consumers who look up to these high-profile figures tend to eat more than they need. This is why food-related advertising should be censored.

On the other hand, regulating food advertising, instead of changing consumers’ dietary habits, is possibly not effective. This is because many eaters are not able to show self-constraint and overconsumption of unhealthy food remains a problem. Food producers have also selected ingredients carefully to ensure that hamburgers, sweets and chocolate bars are tasty and addictive. Because of this, unless governments can impose a tax or enforce food labeling laws, eliminating food advertisements alone cannot stop consumers from overeating.

Another solution is to launch awareness campaigns, which can educate the public about the negative consequences of binge eating, in contrast to banning advertisements on all food products. Consumers should be aware that they can become overweight and prone to other health problems, if they do not control their appetite. They tend to become unsociable and inactive because they are less confident in their appearance. Fearful of these consequences, they will pay attention to healthy eating and only eat food in moderation.

In conclusion, tightening the control over food advertising may help change some consumers’ eating habits, but this should be combined with other approaches to deter people from overeating.
