The prosperity of information and media industries prepares us the ground of getting well in touch with events that happen in the sports circle and showbiz. That also indicates that people nowadays are increasingly paying their attention to what is going on with athletes or other media darlings. This type of worship, however, raises the issue of whether this trend would head towards its contributions or problems.

Whether the wild increase of people admiring sports or media celebrities is good or not depends entirely on how they would behave to express their affections to their idols. What we have seen from news coverage reporting that some overly obsessive fans act irrationally or sometimes crazily is solely somewhat extreme, as normally only a lunatic fringe of admirers would opt to behave like that. However, this doesn't mean there is no need to worry; the worst-case scenario may be akin to the regrettable consequences, or at least, the threats a “zealot” may bring about to the personal security of those celebrities after they have succeeded in invading their privacy, and taken actions to fulfill their morbid needs, like tailing after them or stealing their stuff as a collection. Many film depictions adapted from true stories are related to this.

While the fact listed above indicates one extreme led to by people's over-admiration to their beloved idols, the general, common scenario is that people do gain a lot from the public figures by imitating the behaviors and actions of the latter. For most people, chasing the similarity is human nature, and it is not surprising that people tend to be the same attractive or funny or influential persons as their idols if there is a chance to have anything in common. That means the activities, most of which are positive and helpful to the whole society, that the famous people carry out would somewhat impact the response of the public. A case in point is the public service advertisement that is shot by famous athletes or movie stars, where they call for the public to live a positive life like they do; it is a useful way to preclude people from wasting too many resources or encourage them to cultivate positive daily habits. Concerning this, it would be wise for humans to view this worship as an ideal way of promoting contributive social actions, but knowing people's interests in novelty, and their nature of paying closer attention to flaws rather than good things, this would also lead to the trend that fans are learning bad habits--smoking, drug abuse, promiscuous sex, etc.-- more than good ones from those public figures.

After seeing both speculations, I would argue that the truth would lie somewhere in the middle. It is meaningful to use people's admiration as a tool for forming a positive image for the public, but be aware of the personalities of the celebrities that may mislead their followers; we should also take into account the extreme actions taken by those irrational fans.
