The accelerating growth of personal income has boosted the number of car ownership in modern society. Despite the convenience the delightful prosperity of automobile industry has brought to the car users, I would argue that this popularity of private cars has in fact resulted in some severe problems to environment.

One problem associated with the increase of car use is that the air quality tends to deteriorate. The car exhaust is usually perceived as a major contributor to the emission of carbon dioxide. This means that the more motor vehicles running on the road, the more serious the air pollution tends to become. For instance, the metropolises in China like Beijing and Shanghai have been plagued by the notorious haze from time to time after the proliferation of car use.

The unbearable noise caused by the cars in the heavy traffic is another problem. People are constantly bombarded with an endless cacophony of high-pitched honking from impatient motorists, which can be a nuisance to the city dwellers. Study after study has demonstrated that high-decibel noise pollution was a critical health hazard that increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure.

On the other hand, the prevalence of private cars might have its credit side to the modern citizens in some cases. The most obvious one might be to provide travellers with considerable convenience. Without the limitation from scheduled drive time and fixed waiting point of public transport, the car user enjoys more flexibility to decide when to start off and when to return. Besides, the comfortable experience acquired from the personal vehicle is unlikely to be achieved in the crowded public transportation, especially in rush hours.

To conclude, the short-term merits of increased car use, in my view, are clearly dwarfed by the consequences to our residential environment in the long run considering the air deterioration as well as noise pollution.
