The relative importance of teachers and parents is a frequent topic of discussion when it comes to children’s intelligent and social development.  Though I agree the influence of teachers is very strong, parents are often regarded as one of the strongest predictors of their young charges.

On one hand, being more immersed in learning atmosphere, and more confident in their knowledge of the pedagogy and subject matter and understanding of diversity, teachers do contribute great deal to children’s intelligence and social success.  As the key person and practicer of the course, teachers can effectively help students to acquire general knowledge and to inspire the development of cognitive and psychomotor ability.  Meanwhile, students will be coached to make sense of and provide emotional reactions or be grouped to exercise communication and cooperation skills.

On the other hand, research proves that children’s foundational understanding of intelligence and emotion is formed before they even start explicitly learning a curriculum.  It is the environment created by the parents that could stunt or facilitate a child’s sensory, motor, emotional, and linguistic development.  This is not only because children are prone to model everything a parent dose and incorporate what they see into their own lives.  More importantly, the home education system adopted by the parents and the level of support given to their children will directly affect their children’s intelligence development and problem-solving ability.  Children, for example, who are constantly showered with encouragement form their parents tend to grow up with self-esteem and enjoy more popularity among peers.

In conclusion, although it is true that intelligence can be gained through proper education, parents have much more of a role to play in their children’s understanding and outlook on intelligence and social skills.
