The advent of television has remarkably transformed the recreational methods of young children who were more into games, like hide-and-seek, in the park after school. The preference of children to appealing programmes shown on television has raised concerns about its impacts on these young viewers. The objective of this essay is to outline both the sources of the preference and appropriate approaches to cope with it.

From my perspective, first of all, parents should be the fist role we should blame for. Living in this competitive society, parents are either too busy for work or too exhausted afterwards to spare time or energy to accompany children. The television renders an option for them to calm their fussy children and relieve themselves at the same time. In addition, Thanks to the continuously betterment in life quality, there is a growing affordability for not only television sets but also ingenious electronic devices that the youth are able to rely on for manifold digital entertainment. As a result of that, a variety of television programmes designed for amusing and educating the young generation become children’s best company and resort at home.

In spite of the fact that these television programmes can enrich children’s leisure time, it must be emphasised that spending excessive time before a screen is definitely detrimental to children’s health, ranging from the short sight to the lack of outdoor activities. To encourage children to leave the couch, parents can enroll their children in some extra-curricular courses arranged by schools, communities, or some private organisations. By participating in such activities involved into more practice, children can acquire physical benefits to their growth. What’s more, parents should spend some time with their children in reading or on some outdoor activities, no matter how busy they are. The close family ties create a healthy environment for the mental development of children.

In conclusion, parents ought to shoulder the main responsibility for children’s increasing addiction to television. In my view, only if children are properly guided by their parents, can they fully make use of the merits offered by television.
