If old people cannot physically, mentally or financially support themselves, younger family members should legally support them. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

People’s life expectancy has improved in many societies and the population of the ageing generation are also soaring. Many people believe that the government should set laws and regulations to ensure that the old are well taken care of physically and mentally. Personally, I believe that it puts young people under huge pressure.
It is true that setting legal requirements to take care of the old people would be beneficial. In this way, the young have the obligations to support their senior family members from various perspectives so they would not suffer from loneliness and isolation. Therefore, a society with better life quality for the senior citizens can be anticipated. Apart from this, many cultures traditionally believe that it is the young generation’s responsibility to look after their parents when they lose the self-care capabilities, while introducing relative laws would stimulate the people with less fidelity to follow the social norms.
However, putting the pressure for the young generation alone is unrealistic and unreasonable.
Firstly, the young have to face intense competition to support the family financially. As a result, they have less time to care for the old especially when the elderly suffering from serious diseases which requires all-day care. Hence, the breadwinners of the family may lose the balance between work and their care-taking obligations. Going even further, the workforce in many countries may shrink owing to the weakening productivity and efficiency. Secondly, the elderly may have more choices apart from staying together with their offspring. For example, the nursing home with comprehensive medical equipment and well-trained nurses provides better living conditions.
To sum up, although enacting laws to enforce the young to look after the elder generation is beneficial to the old per se and the society, young people would have to bear a heavier burden.
