In many cities, planners have located shops, schools, offices, and homes in specific areas which were widely separated from each other. Do you think advantages of this policy outweigh disadvantages for city residents?

此外还有一点需要说明,这道题在回忆上除了我们上面给出的题目,还出现了另一个版本是“In many cities, planners tend to arrange shops, schools, offices, homes in specific areas and separate them from each other. Do you think the advantages of this policy outweigh the disadvantages?”,两个版本的区别在于最后的限定词“for city residents”,下面,就和大家来看下具体利弊分析。

Different conceptions are introduced by planners to make arrangements for the urban area; some may consider separating functional areas like shops, offices, and residential complexes from each other. However, no one knows for sure how this works in the long run, and what would be the future of this development.

Whether this type of distribution of areas within a city is advantageous or not depends on a set of factors lying behind, among which the technology, transport, and logistic system play a part. What we can imagine from the outset of a city divided into different functional areas is its inconvenience, since the simplification in any individual part means people may have to travel from place to place to fulfill their diverse requirements. One would be forced to drive long distances away from their offices for just one coffee, or to purchase a batch of goods stuffed in their trunks whenever they had a chance to go to a department store away from their home. However, the scenario mentioned would be theoretically altered by solutions like online ordering, through which the purchasing may be realized over the internet, and there would be couriers out there providing delivery services on food and other commodities.

The reasoning listed above may have yet to address some other questions, like how to make the online system friendly enough for groups like the elderly. The truth, however, is that there is an alternative possibility where we consider residents' living convenience from another perspective. To integrate facilities with the same function means that users would be clear about their destinations, knowing where they would go if they need to, say, buy things that may otherwise be hard to find in a city dotted with stores and groceries. The traffic system would also be optimized to a large extent; commuters would travel more regularly within a day, and what the city authority should do is to deal with congestion around prescribed regions specific hours. Nonetheless, it would still not be that easy for residents to precisely find out what they want when the business district is extended, and planners still need time to build up the relatively perfect transport system.

I believe that the real situation would lie somewhere in the middle. The plan seems to bring convenience to people, and there is no need to worry about the complications that are yet to emerge. However, we may still have a reflection about how things are going to be and whether the future development of technology and the transport system may or may not solve the problems that come along.
