There is an impending trend that more people stay in touch with others and read news from social networking sites on a daily basis. While this faddism is frowned upon by some people, I will see this phenomenon from a positive angle.
Those decrying people’s over reliance on social networking media tend to point to its dehumanized nature and their apprehension about the reliability of news. From their perspective, people immersing in the virtual community may compromise their interpersonal ability in immediate surroundings: younger generations who are weaned on social media tend to find it more stressful to express their true feelings when in a face-to-face setting. Not to be left behind is the dissemination of fake news or gossips in social media. Any provocative ideas may go viral via social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) and therefore mislead the populace.
Plausible though the apprehension seems, I would see people being engrossed in social media from a positive perspective. It would be simplistic to attribute the above problems exclusively to social media: people’s reluctance to personal interaction can be the consequence of their personality, while people’s lack of critical thinking should be culpable for the dissemination of fake news on social media. Based on this, the popularity of social networking platforms can be considered as a blessing to regular communication channel. It provides introverted people with opportunities to make new friends more easily, and it is where people look for different voices besides official tone and therefore come up with their independent positions.
From what has been discussed, it is my conclusion therefore, while the social media fad can be deemed as a positive trend.
